SMC violating Microsoft Licences agreements?

SMC (the ones on TV, you know the Happy Days guy) are promoting their
"exclusive" website marketing program that basically does not give
potential sub-wholesalers control over the web site?

Sub-wholesalers (members of SMC) do not have the option of NOT
recruiting additional SMC members (competition) by removing that option
on the expensive web sites they have to pay for?

SMC members do not have the option of removing certain items from the
inventory they are selling?

Doesn't the IRS classify that as "loss of control" and therefore all
members of SMC using websites in that manner would be classified as
"employees" since they are not true "wholesalers" in control of their
own operations?

Isn't that against the policy of Microsoft to allow companies to use
their products for illegal activities?With all due respect to your argument: What is the ASP.NET question?

ASP.Net developers who work for Microsoft (and are about the only Microsoft
employees who hang out here) don't have any interest in "someone possibly
abusing their products." And neither do the rest of us. Why?

1. There are so many people "abusing" Microsoft products worldwide that
Microsoft has people whose only job it is to deal with it. The rest of the
company is paid to do other things, and get paid for what they do, not for
doing someone else's job.

2. The Internet is full of abuse. And there are newsgroups for people who
want to talk about it. This isn't one of them. There are also organizations
that deal with abuse, and domain personnel and mailboxes for reporting
abuse. Again, this is not germaine to this newsgroup.

3. The purpose of topic-specific newsgroups is to make it easier to find
information about the topic one is interested in. If everyone with a bee in
their bonnet about something simply posted to any newsgroup, these
newsgroups would be cluttered with all kinds of irrelevant information. Your
information is irrelevant to this newsgroup.

This is a newsgroup for programmers and developers using ASP.Net and related
Microsoft .Net technologies. It exists for the purpose of helping developers
with problems related to ASP.Net in particular. Programmers are people who
employ logic on a daily basis. Therefore, if you are a programmer, you must
be a very poor one.

I am finding the switch to Visual Studio 2005 from 2003 a bit of a problem
at times. My latest problem is that when I add an XMLDatasource to an aspx
page and set its datafile to an xml file (with or without accompanying XSD
file), then add a gridview control to the page and set its datasource to the
XMLDatasource, I receive the following error:

The data source for GridView with id 'GridView1' did not have any properties
or attributes from which to generate columns. Ensure that your data source
has content.

My XML file has content. Makes we want to return to reading XML files into
a dataset, then using the dataset or an associated dataview as a datasource.

Smooth surfing between asp pages

Hello,

In php i used something witch ajax so the pages are very smooth.
I also sea that onhttp://www.dotnetnuke.com/ if you press downloads you sea that the page is loaded on the background, and if the page is fully loaded, he shows it to you. Like that you have a website wich is very smooth.

I like to use such a thing in asp.net also.
But how can i make that? Is there a kind of tutorial for it?

smoothing the end users page performance

I have a process intensive asp.net page that takes up to two minutes to finish processing. It's a backoffice page that connects to different web services / API's, does some stuff and returns either success or error + error message, that gets displayed in order on a datagrid.

I know I can't do the process faster, because the web services / API's are 3rd party. But I wan't to "smooth" the end user's performance.

Is there anyway to get the datagrid "updated", so the end user see's the results of each connection to the API's? Instead of waiting until the whole page process, and then get the results. Is some kind of flush? or dump? I tryed response.flush() but it doesn't do anithing I can see.

HoraShadowDo not use any of ASP.NET's built in controls, instead, manually write a table using Response.Write and Response.Flush.

Another thing you have to do is specify the column widths on the table in pixels for ALL columns, otherwise the end user's browser will wait for the whole table before it shows it. If you specify all the widths manually up front, most browsers will write the table as it receives it.

While the page process, If I right click and select view source, I can see the tr and td forming up. But it still doesn't display as it gets received. The code IS received, row by row, but not displayed. It gets displayed as soon as the page finishes rendering and gets dumped to the browser.

Resolved! Thanks!.

The error I was having, was that the browser doesn't display the table flushed untill it receives the /table. The browser displays complete tables, not just pratial tables.

I was able to get it to work by putting environment.newline in the paragraph that was being built. It was a for loop that was building it and was html, so after every </tr> I put in an environment.newline.

most carriers provide a way to receive sms on a telephone via email. I found that to be the easiest.

verizon uses vtext.com, so if you create an email with the TO: field set to 4105551212@.vtext.com, the message will appear on the person's phone.

I like this approach since I don't need any new API's - just construct the email and send.

I'm new to the world of ASP and need some advice. I'm undertaking a project that I'm hoping will create an area map of a city on a webpage. From here, I want to be able to click a particular 'zone' of the city (which I'm hoping will highlight on mouseover). This clicking will trigger the loading of that certain zone's information into a designated area of the webpage. From here, I want to be able to send that information via SMS to the user of the site who will input their number into a text-field. On clicking the 'send' button, the zone's information will then be sent to them. Any advice on how to go about doing all/any of the afore mentioned? I'd appreciate any help...

You can store the zone information in some kind of data source like adatabase or maybe an XML file and let the SMS message be send throughsome external SMS getaway.
Use google to find an SMS getaway to use. I prefer using one in thesame country you are so it's easy to communicate when there arecomplications.

I am at this stage starting to develop my site and I'm hoping to clarify how exactly I would build the map. Hopefully, I will create a large sized jpg or gif of the city in question, and I have heard that I may be able to use pixels to pinpoint exactly on the map where each data 'store' will be extracted from. On mouseover, the few pixel area will hightlight and perhaps I will tool-tip it, and from there I will hope to click it populating the page with the information in question. Hi Fadil, 1) No, we do not connect our mobiles to PC to send SMS. We use gateways such as Clickatell, Macrokiosk (Malaysian-based) etc.2) Per SMS in Malaysia would be RM0.165 which is equivalent to USD0.045. 3) It's always better and logical to use a local SMS Gateway. Like in Europe, you can go for clickatell. However, I do have people in Singapore or Taiwan using my gateway (as it's much cheaper).4) It's quite a tedious job to setup your gateway. In my case, I am actually contracted to this company in Malaysia which has a SMS Gateway. Normally, it's enuff for programmers, developers like us to just make use of SMS gateways (they provide simple to use APIs) to enable SMS-sending in our ASP.Net Applications.

phone connected to a PC running apporpriate software to communicate through
it. Take a look at nowSMS, a useful gateway that works with many phones for
inbound and outbound messaging and has an easy to wrap internal web server
to operate it via local http based requests.

I would however think that a web based srevice certainly for outbound
messaging will be cheaper.

No, the framework has no native support for SMS. It does have support for
making web requests which is how 99.9% of SMS gateways handle client
interactions. Many of the web based services can be interacted with via C#

available. Some possible drawbacks: the receivers need to register there
(because they pay for the received SMS'es) and you need to know
what email address to use for a specific cell phone.
You can then send an email to that address (usually only header, empty body)

about the SMS i am currently working in this project !!

what you need at the begining is a Gateway SMS Provider and i usedwww.clickatell.com they are cheap and reliable ... then you need to choose the protocol that you need to use and i think the http will be suitable as you want to send for group not using the SMTP as this is better for single SMS or small numbers !!!

the Provider will give you an API that will tell you how you can use the parematers to get the funtionality that you need !!!

clickatell is a provider !!! yes you are right !!! you can register and buy a bulk messages from them where you can use for your application and they have different protocols like SMTP( is good for single and small number of messages) , http ( for a larger number of messages as group) and my application is using the http protocol.
there is also a code sample as well that you can find when you find the pdf files as API documentation. read it and if you need any other help get back to me where i could !!!

I can recommend taking a look athttp://www.ozeki.hu/ they make an SMS Server program that you install on the server and then connect your own mobile phone by its data cable to the server. That way the cost of the messages can be put on your phone bill without having to buy credits from a third party.

If you can send an email instead from your application ,this solution could work for you; Many internet providers have a service for their customers were you can set up their server to send an SMS trigged by emails.

It worked for me. It turned out that I could configure their system to trig on a certain word or words in the subject line ,and then forward the subject line in an SMS to a list of mobile phones. All this could be set up at the web-page of my provider ; They had a specific setup-page for email services.

So I set it up to trig on the word "Alarm" ,and sendt a mail to myself with subject line "Its an alarm" ,and ,yes ,seconds later I received an SMS !!!!


Kwik's right! What he/she is talking about is using smtp as the means of communicating the details of your sms in a similar way to http. It just depends on your needs and what you find easier!

sms email receive twice for tmobile and cingular

I'm writing a webpage that will send sms to cell phone using smtp
(System.Web.Mail.SmtpMail.SmtpServer)

When I send to tmobile (tmomail.net) or cingular (mycingular.net),
cell phone receives twice.

When I send the same message to AT&T (mobile.att.net) or regular
email, I just receive once.

I test it and found out if I use outlook to send the message, I also
receives twice.

However, if I send the message using other web-based email service,
like yahoo.com, I only receive it once.

my webpage Set SmtpServer = "localhost" and the outlook I use also
uses a internal email server. I think this have something to do with
it.

Anyone can share some ideas?

Where does the actual SMTP that is doing the sending reside ?

Does your internal mail server have a smarthost pointing and routing to the
actual SMTP ?

If you are sending it thru an external mail server ie actual.mysmtp.com. You
may want to disable your internal SMTP Server and point your webpage Set
SmtpServer = "actual.mysmtp.com".

Please take note that if you are using outlook with your internal email
server and if you disabling your own internal SMTP Server, you need to
change the incoming and outgoing mail settings.

SMS Connection in .Net

Is there a namespace, reference or other include that would open allow me to
connect to our SMS database. We post queries as reports to the web so we
need to get the list of available queies, and interrogate them for there
contents before running them.

We have done this in old ASP but we are looking for a more efficient way to
do this since we are doing a complete redesign of the system.

concentrating on this. Generally, this depend on the server application's
exposed programming interface. Not very familiar with SMS server, however,

webservice, COM objects or .net specific components, we can use them to
communicate with the SMS server. In .net framework, there has natural
support for web access(over http ...) , webservice call and .net remoting
...

BTW, as you mentioned that you've done the communication in one of your
classic ASP applications, how did you do the work in it? Maybe we can look
for some similiar approaches in .net world according to the ones used in
your classic ASP application.

ThanksSMS is an email but it goes to the service provider and they in turn relay
it to the phone.
You need to have the email address of the service provider to make it work.

To my knowledge, ASP.NET might not be the best technology for that. Also, those commercials you see are getting help from Providers. If you wanted to develop something like this you would need to get in contact with the providers that you wanted to work with. I am sure they offer Web Services to affiliates. If they do provide an Xml Web Service of some type, then yes it is possible to do it with ASP.NET. However it is up to the phone providers. Don't expect them to give you the help they need for free either.

I have a friend that offer that kind of service. So, the service is toprovide your company with that SMS things. Then, he will maintain thesoftware as needed for your company.

The best solution is to use a 3rd party SOAP/Web Service to send SMS messages. If you use google then you can do a search for providers in your country that offer such a service and add it to your .Net project via a web service. You can then create the object to send the SMS (usually only a few lines of code) that are provided by the company you choose.

I am working with a client who is a trading firm. They would like for users to be able to sign up for buy/sell notifications sent via SMS messaging. Has anyone worked with SMS messaging in the past? How can I achieve this? Do I need to use a third party service to relay the messages to the cell phone network(s)? If so, who?

there are lots of companies that do what you are looking for and it is not standard across the world. In the United States, I know of a company called goldpocket that does this. I know it's easier in europe but don't know the details their. basically, you can have a URL called based on info in the request (including callers phone number). You could authenticate off that with a handler or web service you write to respond to that URL.

Assuming you have your own webserver, you can do it with an old phone, a
cable for the phone - and a gateway like nowsms. Its a very reliable
approach for the scale your on about - however, its not for free. Another
approach is to use the Hayes AT commands if your modem supports them in your
mobile phone, you'll need to resort to trawling the web for examples though.

If you got a GSM phone and data cable, you can setup VisualGSM Lite, a
freeware SMS sender -
http://www.sms-gateway-software.com. A setup like this is ok for
adhoc messaging. For bulk blasting, you'll need an internet SMS
Gateway.

ThanXI have done this 2 ways - none elegant

1. I went to the website where I can send messages from and viewed source - copied to local drive - figured out the form input names ( textboxes and any weird id needed ) . On the aspx page, i create a form - fill in the message - and post to the providor website.

2. Create an email with your message and send it to cellphone#@.teleflip.com
teleflip.com is a FREE message redirector that figures out what system the cellphone is on and sends the message. Only drawback here is if the go down - your app goes down.

Has a bunch of examples on sending mail. You just need to find out how the phone carriers require the phone numbers to written... For instance, SKYTEL pagers are something like xxxxxxxxxx@.skytel.com
Its not like sending emails, it needs a gateway, where you subscribe with companies that provide such gatways and it costs too !!!

TextAnywhere offer an excellent web service for sending SMS messages- cost UK 10 pence (approx US 18 cents).

Let me know if you decide they are right for you as I have written code to consume the web service methods.

I've installed SMTP service other then IIS server on my computer. I'm using "127.0.0.1" ip number while connecting.

But I still get error "Could not access 'CDO.Message' object". When I trace I see that the server rejected one or more recipient addresses.

What settings must I check? Is there any other program to install (such as exchange server) to be able to send mails using SMTP.

I'm using SMTP server for my web application and I have the following problems:
- Sometimes, the mail is stored in Queue folder and it is not delivered never. Why is this happening??
- In another application, Console Application, until the program is notfinished, the mail is not sent to the recipients... why is the mailwaiting for finishing the main program??

It is in the Queue folder because it failed to send the message. As for your second question, since it relates to a console application, I recommend you post that on theMSDN forums.

Is it possible using the smtp class in asp.net to send emails and
authenticate to the mail server that is sending the emails out.
Currently I have a web application that works fine on my machine, will send
email to both my company email addresses and to non-company email addresses.
However, as soon as I move the app into the production server it does not
send email to non company email addresses. What I mean by company is our
domain could @dotnet.itags.org.domain.com and it will work fine sending emails to any one
with that email address, but anyone without that in their email address and
it crashes. Any help on this would be appreciated.

First of all you should know System.Web.Mail is just a wrapper over CDO
objects.
And then MailMessage also have property called "Fields" that you can use.
Just use the field names in the example to fill in the information.

I think the problem is : The production server requires authentication
before you can send a mail using a specific email Id.
In ASP .Net there is no direct way to achieve this, so the solution Lau has
suggested can be implemented in ASP .Net by adding a reference to the COM
object.

Keep in mind that the method I showed to you is officially "undocumented" -
meaning it might not be supported in the future. I suspect that's why this
solution is rarely recommended.
I'm sure the MVPs around here are aware of this undocumented solution - but
they don't recommend it - and probably for good reason. I'd be interested in
knowing why. This question is posed with some regularity and they always
seem to recommend some more complicated method that relies on CDO/COM
wrapper-based solution.

authenticate to the mail server that is sending the emails out.

Currently I have a web application that works fine on my machine, will send
email to both my company email addresses and to non-company email addresses.
However, as soon as I move the app into the production server it does not
send email to non company email addresses. What I mean by company is our
domain could @dotnet.itags.org.domain.com and it will work fine sending emails to any one
with that email address, but anyone without that in their email address and
it crashes. Any help on this would be appreciated.

It doesn't really matter.

First of all you should know System.Web.Mail is just a wrapper over CDO
objects.

And then MailMessage also have property called "Fields" that you can use.

Just use the field names in the example to fill in the information.

I think the problem is : The production server requires authentication
before you can send a mail using a specific email Id.

In ASP .Net there is no direct way to achieve this, so the solution Lau has
suggested can be implemented in ASP .Net by adding a reference to the COM
object.

Keep in mind that the method I showed to you is officially "undocumented" -
meaning it might not be supported in the future. I suspect that's why this
solution is rarely recommended.

I'm sure the MVPs around here are aware of this undocumented solution - but
they don't recommend it - and probably for good reason. I'd be interested in
knowing why. This question is posed with some regularity and they always
seem to recommend some more complicated method that relies on CDO/COM
wrapper-based solution.

The only reason to use that is if the smtp server needs authentication.

I've sent quite a few references to this FAQ page in response
to questions about sending authenticated smtp mail:

If the server doesn't need authenticacion, the standard, less complicated,
methods of sending mail ( the "wrappers" you refer to ) work just fine,
so why introduce complicated schema code if there's no need for it ?

I don't think I've come up with a problem not documented/solved there.
